The Southern Elementary Family Resource Center (FRC) was established as a component of the historic Kentucky Education Reform Act (KERA) of 1990. The mission of these school-based Centers is to help academically at-risk students succeed in school by helping to minimize or eliminate barriers to learning. Family Resource Centers are strengthened by community partnerships in their ability to provide vital programs, services and referrals to students and their families.

 

What services does the Family Resource Center provide?

  • Referrals for full-time preschool child care for children two and three years of age

  • Referrals for after school child care for children ages four to twelve

  • Referrals to community, social, health, and psychological agencies

  • Health and educational services for new and expectant parents

  • Access to parent education, GED, and computer classes

  • Assistance in meeting familial needs (clothing, food, housing, job training, and education referrals).

Where is the Family Resource Center located?

Southern Elementary Family Resource Center is located in the west pod of the school, beside the gym.

 

Who can use the Family Resource Center?

Services provided by the Family Resource Center are available to all children, parents, and families in the Southern Elementary School District. The center is open Monday thru Friday from 8:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. or by appointment.

 

What can you do to help the Family Resource Center?

VOLUNTEER -Adult volunteers are essential to our school in many ways, and we absolutely value any assistance you are willing to provide. Please contact the Family Resource Center at 859-381-3659 to discuss volunteer opportunities.

DONATE - Items such as: underwear (new), socks (new), hats & gloves, jackets & coats, books, jean and sweat pants, belts, school supplies, backpacks, and laundry detergent are always needed in the Family Resource Center.

Advisory Council

Each Family Resource Center has a local Advisory Council comprised of school personnel, parents of students in the school, and community representatives.  The Advisory Council serves as a guiding body for the Family Resource Center, making suggestions and recommendations regarding services, programs, and budget expenditures.  Everyone is invited to attend meetings and become more involved with the Family Resource Center.  Listed below are the names of those currently serving as members of the Southern Elementary Family Resource Center Advisory Council.
